A rubbish look? Mother turned up for girls' night out wearing a belted BIN LINER after best friend told her she’d ‘look good in a trash bag’

  • Lisa Barnes, 38, from Newcastle, created a dress from a £1 Poundland bin bag
  • Wore the 10-minute creation as a prank after pal Michelle Cox made a comment
  • Michelle had said 'you'd look good in a bin bag' so Lisa wore it for pre-drinks

A crafty fashionista called out her best pal who quipped 'you'd look gorgeous in a bin bag' by turning up for a night out wearing a wheelie bin liner as a dress.

Lisa Barnes, 38, from Newcastle, wore the BLD (bin liner dress) to Michelle Cox's house for pre-drinks ahead of their night out on Saturday after Michelle made the off-the-cuff comment during a shopping trip days earlier.

Tickled by Michelle's ringing endorsement, Lisa decided to put her style credentials to the test by whipping up a wrap over-style dress.

Within ten minutes Lisa had snipped the Poundshop plastic bag to create the flattering v-neck and front panel - all held securely in place with a wide black belt.

Full-time mum Lisa decided to surprise Michelle, 46, by wearing her custom creation to the party at her house - resulting in fits of giggles and her pal declaring 'I knew you were up to something, I love it.'

A hilarious 46-second video shows Lisa's 16-year-old son Michael Barnes modelling the 'dress' and flamboyantly posing in front of the mirror declaring 'I'm going to rock up to prom like this'.

The footage then cuts to Michelle's reaction as she sees what Lisa is wearing for the first time and is reduced to fits of laughter.

Lisa said: 'Michelle's face when she saw it on Saturday was brilliant, she couldn't believe it.

'She started laughing and said I was crazy. I didn't stay in the dress long as it was hot and sticking to me because I was sweating.

'After a few minutes I told her 'I need to get upstairs and get out of this'.'

Inspiration for the 'trashy' dress came from a four-hour shopping trip to the Metrocentre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, on Tuesday.

The pair were browsing the rails to find something for children's parties company boss Michelle to wear to Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse.

Weighed down by armfuls of dresses full-time mum Lisa pointed Michelle in the direction of the changing rooms and ordered her to try them on.

Self-conscious of her size 18 figure, cervical cancer survivor Michelle joked 'it's alright for you, being so slim you could put a bloody bin bag on and look gorgeous'.

The throwaway comment planted the idea in Lisa's mind and when she got home she rummaged through her kitchen drawers and dug out a roll of Poundshop wheelie bin liners.

Lisa said: 'When we went shopping I picked up loads of dresses for her to try and said 'you'll try on everything'.

'She said 'it's alright for you you could wear a bin bag and look amazing'.

'I told her not to be stupid and encouraged her to try lots of different dresses and styles.

'There and then I decided I would make one and wear it to hers for drinks.

'I shared a snap of me in it on Facebook. I wasn't expecting anyone to really like it, it was just for a bit of fun, but everyone loved it.

'It's just one big wheelie bin liner, which is longer than a normal plain bin bag.

'I haven't done dress making before - I can't sew to save my life.

'Michael stood up wearing it and while it was on him I could just cut out the style of a wrap dress with the scissors.

'I cut out the v-neck and then cut it straight down the middle so I could wrap it over and then cut away at the bottom, it only took ten minutes.

'It's all one piece. You put your arms in like putting on a coat, wrap it round and secure it with a belt.

'I was pleased with how it turned out, it's done pretty well considering it's a bin liner.

'My son thought I was crazy wearing a bin bag dress. I told him it was just to go to Michelle's house in and he said 'you're not leaving the house in a bin bag mam'.'

Michelle's husband Brian Cox, 54, picked Lisa up from her house on Saturday evening.

Designated driver Brian was shocked when he saw her wearing a bin bag and heels, and nervously questioned what she would do in case it ripped.

The videos show Michael hilariously posing in the dress and showcasing it from different angles.

In the footage he can be heard saying: 'Oh, the figure on me. I've got my belt on, I'm going to rock up to prom like this I think. Lovely.

'Make sure I get that angle in.'

The second half of the clip shows Michelle walking into the room and her funny reaction to the prank dress.

In the video Michelle can be heard saying: 'I knew you were up to something you little sod, it's hilarious, turn around.

'You've even got cut outs, oh [I'm] creased! Are you wearing it? I love it!

Lisa replies: 'That's what Bri said. He said 'what happens if it rips when you're out?' I went 'I'm not keeping it on, I've brought my dress.'

Michelle then says: 'Love it, you absolute nutter.'

Mum-of-two Michelle said: 'I dont like clothes shopping, because I'm bigger I find it really hard to find clothes I like to wear.

'I had cervical cancer and been put into early menopause and the whole idea of trying stuff on I wasn't keen on.

'While out shopping I said to Lisa that being so slim 'you could put a bloody bin bag on and look gorgeous', that's how it all came about.

'As I was trying stuff on Lisa was sending me funny pictures of her huffing and puffing waiting for me - it made it a right fun afternoon.'

Michelle said she had no idea that Lisa would rustle up the dress - and her dressing room statement was proved right.

Michelle said: 'When Lisa arrived on Saturday night I was finishing off getting ready upstairs and didn't have a clue what was going on.

'I walked into the living room and she's stood there with this bin bag on - but it looked lush.

'I was thinking 'oh my god I can't believe it' - there was even detail cut into the back.

'It was hilarous, I thought it was brilliant. And I was right, she did look bloody good in a bin bag'.'
