Sports Advertising / Retro Ad of the Week: FIFA World Cup, 1930

As the U.S. prepares to take on Germany in the World Cup today, brush up on your FIFA history with an advertisement poster for the very first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. The trend of depicting a player in action in the event’s official emblem lasted through 1966. With the exception of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, all posters since have featured symbolic representations of the game or trophy. See how World Cup posters have evolved throughout history here and Go USA!

FUN FACT: There have been only 19 World Cup events since 1930 due to a 12-year hiatus during World War II. Of those 19 tournaments, there have been just 8 different winners.  (Source: Sports Net)
