ANC Celebrates Successful 112 Anniversary, Outlines Priorities for the Year Ahead

The African National Congress (ANC) celebrated its 112th anniversary with a successful rally that filled the 43,500-seat Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday, January 13, 2024. The event commemorates the founding of the ANC and provides an opportunity for the party to outline its priorities and plans for the coming year.

The Annual January 8th Statement was Presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa, with addresses by the Tripartite alliance partners sanco, cosatu, and sacp as well as the party’s leagues (women, youth, and veterans).

SANCO expressed support for the ANC, stating that they will vote for the party and those who do not follow suit will be expelled. However, it was noted that former President Jacob Zuma, who is the leader of the SANCO in KwaZulu-Natal, has chosen to not support the ANC and will instead back the newly unveiled Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party).

SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila raised concerns about the ANC NEC’s failure to address Zuma’s actions and criticized Zuma for acting in his own self-interest rather than the interest of the people.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the ANC’s prospects in the 2024 National General Elections, stating that the ANC is ready to launch a formidable campaign engaging with citizens and every sector of society to seek a decisive mandate.

Ramaphosa also addressed economic challenges, unemployment, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy. He specifically highlighted the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which has created over 1.2 million work and livelihood opportunities and the SAYouth online platform, which has provided learning and earning opportunities for more than 1 million young people.

In addition to economic issues, Ramaphosa also addressed the need for continued efforts to address service delivery and infrastructure challenges and called for the protection of the family as a basic unit of society and the combatting of gender-based violence.

“In 2024, we must continue to address service delivery and infrastructure challenges.

This means that every ANC branch must continue to work in its community, and with School Governing Bodies, ward committees, Community Policing Forums and community organisations to ensure problems of service delivery are attended to swiftly and sustainably.”

“Every ANC member must take every opportunity to speak out against a toxic masculinity that enables men to abuse women and children and abandon their family responsibilities. ANC branches must work with community-based organisations to ensure no family turns a blind eye to gender-based violence.”

On the topic of resolving the energy crisis and ending load shedding, Ramaphosa pointed to the progress made in implementing the Energy Action Plan and called for communities to reduce overall electricity consumption and support programs to introduce pay-as-you-go meters and disconnect illegal electricity and water connections.

“In the short term, we continue to call upon all South Africans to use electricity sparingly and to reduce their overall consumption of electricity.

ANC branches must also campaign to ensure communities pay for services used, and support programmes to introduce pay-as-you-go me- ters and disconnect illegal electricity and water connections.”

In the fight against crime and corruption, Ramaphosa welcomed steps that have been taken in increasing police personnel and improving the capacity of the National Prosecuting Authority, as well as the establishment of specialized units and the work of Operation Shanela to target illegal mining and other priority crimes.

“The NEC has instructed our deployees in government to ensure the police service is more responsive to crime issues in communities raised by CPFs so that we avoid vigilante actions by disgruntled residents. ANC branches must continue to play a leadership role in establishing and supporting CPFs”

The ANC will launch its election manifesto at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on February 24.
