Dashboard Week Day 4: Boy Band Data Base

by Trea McElhone

For our final day of dashboard week we were tasked with creating a dashboard using the Internet Boy Band Data Base, with their data from here.

I was excited to get started and create a fun dashboard, and was inspired by the original iPod classic and wanted to create a dashboard based around this design idea. As our dataset also included a video URL link, I wanted to try and integrate a video into the main screen of my mp3 player.

Here is a quick sketch of my initial idea.

Thankfully, my dashboard didn't require any extra external data prep, so I was able to jump straight into Tableau Desktop. One particular difficulty I had was with my custom mp3 player PNG as I wasn't able to layer my video behind the player and select to play through the transparent screen of the PNG player. I had to use a bit of strange work-a-round to try and fix this and I cut up the original PNG image like a jigsaw so there would be a true gap in the centre for my tableau aspects.

Sadly, one caveat I discovered later on in the day once I published my viz on tableau desktop, is that embedded youtube videos are not supported on tableau public : ' ( , which was a very sad discovery for me. However everything else in my dashboard worked and users can even select the menu button to be taken to some quick stats about boy bands and how they charted on the Billboard Top 100 Chart.

Since it's not fully functional on tableau public - check out my demo GIF below!
