Megan Thee Stallion showed her vulnerability and strength through her latest single “Cobra” and broke down where she came up with the title of the track.

The rapper's latest release dropped on Friday, with surprisingly direct lyrics about Megan's struggle with depression and anxiety. The 28-year-old, whose name is Megan Pete, opened up in the song about dealing with multiple obstacles, including the deaths of both her parents and suicidal thoughts.

“At night, I'm sittin' in a dark room thinkin'/ Probably why I always end up drinkin'/ Yes, I'm very depressed/ How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist?” Megan raps.

The lyrics continue: “Never thought a bitch like me would ever hit rock bottom/ Man, I miss my parents, way too anxious, always cancel my plans."

Megan explained on social media why she chose “Cobra” as the title to tell her story. The rapper posted an infographic of a cobra the day before the song's release that explained, “Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats.”

Megan then posted another graphic about cobras on Saturday that focused on “healing and renewal.”

“They gracefully shed their skins in hopes to heal from their past and during the process are very vulnerable,” the graphic read. “We, too, can gracefully let go of the past and focus on being the baddest hotties we can be.”

The lyrics in the single also allude to cheating allegations that some fans believe are directed at rapper Pardison Fontaine. Megan and Pardi, as he's more commonly known, were confirmed to be dating in 2020 and rumored to have split in spring of 2023. Many believe “Cobra” gives some insight as to what may have happened between the couple.

“Pulled up, caught him cheatin', gettin' his d**k sucked in the same spot I'm sleepin'/ Lord, give me a break, I don't know how much more of this shit I can take," the lyrics continued.

“Cobra” is Megan's first independently released song after parting ways with label 1501 Certified Entertainment following a lengthy legal battle. Ahead of releasing “Cobra,” Megan revealed during an Instagram Live that her current album is being self-funded. “I have no label right now. We’re doing everything funded straight out of Megan Thee Stallion pockets,” she said. “We in my pockets, hotties, so let's do our big one!” At the time, the rapper described the new single as “a story by Megan Thee Stallion.”

Megan Thee Stallion has faced adversity with the loss of her parents, but also more recently after Tory Lanez was sentenced to ten years in prison for shooting her in July 2020. Megan was hospitalized for foot injuries at the time. The contentious and highly-publicized trial called into question Megan's credibility, with some public figures blatantly calling the rapper a liar.

Megan did not attend the sentencing but shared a statement that read: “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace. Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”
