Oguchi Onyewu parts ways with Charlton

Oguchi Onyewu is looking for a new club again. The centerback was one of several players that Charlton parted ways with following the end of the 2014-15 season, making him a free agent.

Onyewu only signed with Charlton last October, but his one season at the club didn't go so great. He only played in three matches and made just one start.

There was a time when Onyewu was the Americans' best defender and a respected player in Europe, having parlayed a great spell at Standard Liege into an AC Milan move. But he tore his patellar tendon in a World Cup qualifier in 2009 and has not been near the same player since. After a year-long recover, Onyewu has played for Milan, Twente, Sporting Lisbon, Malaga, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton. That's a shocking number of clubs in a short time and, unfortunately, none showed any interest in keeping him around for any extended period of time.

Now 32 years old, Onyewu will find it tough to land at another club. He's been signing with lower and lower statured clubs, staying in the Championship with his last three and not making much of an impact at any. Now it's tough to imagine another Championship team taking a chance on him. Maybe this is when he finally signs with MLS after years of rumors, but even that would probably require him significantly lowering his wage demands.

Wherever Onyewu lands next, hopefully it's somewhere he can play with some regularity and enjoy himself, regardless of the level. It'd be nice to see him close out his career happy and contributing.
