ELECTRIC BLUE
One of Superman’s most startling changes — in outfit and abilities — took place in 1997. During “The Final Night,” Superman loses his connection to his primary power source: Earth’s sun. He evolved into an electrical being and wore a blue-and-white containment suit to keep his energy from dispersing. When DC announced the change, Norm MacDonald, then the anchor of “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update, commented: “Beginning in March, DC Comics will change Superman’s traditional red-and-blue costume to a new form-fitting bodysuit. The problem with the old costume? Not gay enough.”
