Fact of The Day – Phosphenes: The Colours Seen When Pressure Is Applied To Eyes

Have you ever stood up too fast or rubbed your eyes and felt like you’ve seen another dimension due to the colours or stars you see? What you see because of standing up too fast or rubbing your eyes are called phosphenes.

The word phosphene also originates from the Greek words phōs (which means light) and phainein (which means to show). Phosphenes are seen by pressure which is applied to closed eyes, or a mechanical or electrical interference with the visual system. Whilst phosphenes are normal, seeing them more often or all the time could indicate a serious medical condition.
