Mountain Evans, as seen from Aurora, is named for John Evans, the first territorial governor of Colorado. It was originally named Mount Rosa or Mount Rosalie.

Thank you for continuing the discussion about Colorado place names, especially Mount Evans. I wonder if The Denver Post could start a discussion about restoring the mountain’s original name (Mount Rosa or Mount Rosalie). The authors of this column, two University of Denver professors, made no suggestions.

It appears its name was changed to Evans by politicians in 1895. How about calling on the governor to undo that mistake and furthering the state’s reconciliation overtures to Native Americans over Sand Creek and asking him to restore the original name?

The road needs a name change, too. I suggest combinations of maybe “The Arapaho-Cheyenne Scenic Byway” or “Sand Creek Memorial Byway.” The wilderness area name would then need changing, as well, which would be up to Congress.  But that should not stop Colorado from changing the peak name. We already changed it once.
