Tehuana Documentary and Dinner

Join Gilcrease at Circle Cinema for a screening of Diego Huerta’s "Tehuana" documentary, which explores the matriarchal society of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca and the customs and beliefs of the Tehuana women. Attendees enjoy a complimentary taco dinner in the lobby then see the film, learn about Miguel Covarrubias’ Tehuana Woman, and shop for gifts from Hilo de Amor. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Tickets $11 members, $13 non-members. Tacos will be available starting at 7pm, film at 7:30pm.

About the film: The world-renowned image through the painter Frida Khalo, Tehuana, has become an icon of beauty and elegance of Mexican women. But who is the Tehuana? Where does she live?. What she do for a living? What is her lifestyle like? Questions that for over ninety years were believed to know the answer, but no one had answered them with certainty. Tehuana answers those questions and more, entering the world of the village of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec that refuses to lose its uses and customs. A people descended from the Zapotec empire. They knew how to adapt to the arrival of immigrants from all over the world more than a hundred years ago.
