Dr. Lakra is the taken name of Jerónimo López Ramirez, an internationally renowned artist from Oaxaca. The nickname´doctor” initially evoked the bag in which he once carried his tattoo equipment; while ´lakra´in Spanish translates as scarred from sickness, but is often used in Mexican slang to signify a delinquent. However, Dr. Lakra has since expanded his repertoire to include major wall murals and many works of art on paper.
In his signature work, the artist transforms vintage magazines, movie posters, postcards, pinup models, hygiene magazines and other materials from popular culture with added imagery of demons, skeletons, and other macabre tattoo iconography.
