Nokia 5140

The 5140 is a rugged, splashproof Swiss Army Knife of a phone with a number of intriguing outdoorsy features.

To access the battery and SIM card, you slide the bottom half of the case off.

The 5140's flashlight shines from the top of the phone, right next to the power button.

You can hook the phone up to your laptop with a USB cable to sync addresses and calendar entries or use the 5140 as an EDGE modem on the Cingular network.

On the left side of the phone (shown), you'll find the volume buttons. The right side of the phone features the push-to-talk button.

The flashless VGA camera lens sits on the back of the phone.

The 5140's menus are fairly basic, though they make use of its color screen.

A 'fitness coach' application lets you build an exercise plan to keep on your phone.

Among its outdoorsy applications, the 5140 sports a compass, a bubble level, a flashlight, a thermometer, a decibel meter and an FM radio.

The flashless VGA camera did okay in our simulated-daylight tests; though pictures tended towards blue and we saw jaggy diagonal lines, images were relatively sharp, clear, and free of excess noise.

After sliding the bottom half of the case off, you access the battery and SIM card by pulling on the strap which lifts up the white panel you see here.

After tunneling your way through to the battery, you'll find the SIM card right underneath.

You should feel a real sense of accomplishment when you manage to fit the thin plastic and elastic pieces together to make the carrying strap. The little dangly hook contains a magnifying glass and whistle.

The wired headset acts as an antenna for the FM radio.
