You might be right considering the suit on that Val Zod figure looks EXACTLY like a recolor of the Superman cover suit.

Other than brainiac looks so wierd

I don't hate that Ghost of Zod figure, but I also have no grand need for it, doesn't really fit with anything and since the appearance is limited to this incredibly limited edition comic, it obviously going to be obscure as hell. The rest just don't look very good. As much as I'd like to add Val Zod to my collection, this spikey armor look ain't it, and I'm willing to take the chance that he eventually releases a normal version of the character somewhere down the road. If not, well, I guess I won't have him.
