01/4Irrfan Khan, a man of few needs and simple tastes

He went away too soon and the collective loss of our country is irreparable. Irrfan Khan was talent personified and he was so dedicated to his work that even after coming home he stayed awake till early morning reading scripts and planning work.
I remember to have first interacted with him in 2009 before the release of Slumdog Millionaire. He was easily accessible on phone for quotes on entertainment stories and would respond with such familiarity, taking your first name and enquiring about your well-being before discussing work that you felt instantly connected with him. He definitely became a little difficult to access after Slumdog Millionaire won Oscars, but he was quick to respond to messages as soon as he saw them, never saying no for any quote and never having that attitude one finds so common in successful Bollywood actors.

02/4Mother’s touch

In what can be described as a strange twist of fate, his mother passed away just three days before his final journey. She must have been really lucky to have escaped witnessing this cathartic moment as Irrfan was definitely a specially dear child who loved everything that his Ammi cooked. In an interview given a couple of years ago he said he liked his food simple, the way his mother cooked. Clearly, Maa ke Haath ka khana was supreme for this great actor who was simplicity personified.

03/4Love for Mughlai food

In the interview given to a popular international journalist, he mentioned that he was fond of Mughlai Food but more of what could be cooked at home, like the pasandas which the restaurants did not normally prepare. He believed in eating as a complete experience. He said he loved to smell the vegetables and ate them mindfully. He had an aversion for smelly fish.

04/4Humility beyond comparison

One of the best actors in the world with so many national and international hits and critically acclaimed works to his credit, what made Irrfan special was his simplicity. He remained grounded, be it in matters of dressing or in his taste for food. The void created in world cinema and in the lives of his fans can never be filled. We only hope he is in a better world, sitting with his Ammi, with that endearing smile we love and will miss so much.
