Overview - Guatemala City

Located in the Valle de la Ermita, Guatemala City is the Capital of and largest city by population in Guatemala. It has approximately 995,000 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2018. The Guatemala City metropolitan area comprised 2,749,161 residents as of the 2015 INEG census.


Guatemala City's rapid transit network consists of two bus rapid transit services. It also has five arterial bus rapid transit services. There is also a rapid bus line initially built as part of TransMetro but eventually operated separately (Line 5) as well as a rapid bus network in the southeast (TransPinula) that are not covered on this website as they lack dedicated lanes.

Transmetro

Opened 2007, Transmetro consists of two bus rapid transit services and five arterial bus rapid transit services that serve the city of Guatemala City, Guatemala and the surrounding suburbs. All line names are for the district/zone they primarily serve or terminate in.

Line 1 (Línea 1)

Transmetro Line 1 is an arterial bus rapid transit service on a clockwise loop alignment. It runs from Centro Cívico in the south to San Sebastián in the north, serving 10 stations of which all are served in a single direction only.


Line 1 was opened in December 2012. At some point in 2017 or 2018, the line was rerouted from Tipografía to Centro Cívico and new stations were added. Line 1 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 2 (Línea 2)

Transmetro Line 2 is an arterial bus rapid transit service on a counterclockwise loop alignment. It runs from Hipódromo del Norte in the north to San Sebastián in the south, serving 5 stations of which all are served in a single direction only.


Line 2 was opened in January 2016. Sometime between June 2021 and January 2023, the semipermanent Asunción station was closed in favor of making the existing Simeón Cañas station bidirectional (with the name Simeón Cañas being reassigned to the new stop in the other direction and the original Simeón Cañas being renamed San José de la Montaña). Line 2 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 6 (Línea 6)

Transmetro Line 6 is an arterial bus rapid transit service on a north-south alignment. It runs from Fegua in the south to Proyectos in the north (in Zone 6), serving 16 stations of which 12 (including Fegua) are served in a single direction only. Services currently bypass Beatas de Belén and La Merced stations.


Line 6 was opened in April 2015. Line 6 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 7 (Línea 7)

Transmetro Line 7 is an arterial bus rapid transit service on a semicircular alignment. It runs from USAC Periférico (in Zone 12) in the southwest to La Merced in the northeast via Zone 7, serving 18 stations of which 6 (including La Merced) are served in a single direction only. It runs primarily on the Anillo Periférico. The transfer station with Line 12 at Aguilar Batres is still in works. Services currently bypass Colón station.


Line 7 was opened in phases starting from September 2019, with the last expansion to the line being the opening of Pasaje Aycinena in January 2022. Line 7 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 12 (Línea 12)

Transmetro Line 12 is a bus rapid transit service on a southwest-northeast alignment. It runs from Centra Sur (in Zone 12) in the southwest to Plaza Barrios in the northeast, serving 14 stations of which 3 (including Plaza Barrios) are served in a single direction only.


Line 12 was opened in February 2007. After the COVID re-openings, the line was rerouted to no longer stop at El Calvario. Line 12 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 13 (Línea 13)

Transmetro Line 13 is a bus rapid transit service on a north-south alignment. It runs from Tipografía in the north to Hangares in the south with a shuttle looping between Plaza Argentina and Plaza Berlin, serving 22 stations of which all are served in a single direction only. Services currently bypass Plaza Barrios station.


Line 13 was opened in August 2010. When the Plaza Berlin loop was reopened sometime between May 2023 and February 2024, it was set to connect at Plaza Argentina instead of Hangares as it had been before COVID. The last expansion to the line was the opening of Cantón Exposición sometime between June 2021 and May 2023. Line 13 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.

Line 18 (Línea 18)

Transmetro Line 18 is an arterial bus rapid transit service on an east-west alignment. It runs from Fegua in the west to Atlántida in the east with a shuttle running between Atlántida and Paraíso, serving 11 stations of which 6 (including Fegua) are served in a single direction only. Services currently bypass Beatas de Belén and La Merced stations.


Line 18 was opened in April 2014. The last expansion to the line was the opening of Portales in February 2022 . Line 18 is owned and operated by Guatemala City.
