If this movie came out today it would be hailed as a timely comedy about the immigrant experience in America and xenophobic government agents. 100-word review: Based on a series of SNL sketches I've never seen or heard of before, Coneheads follows a family of humanoid aliens (with bald, cone-shaped heads) as they try to blend in as real, dysfunctional Earthlings. I unironically don't understand the awful score this gets. I haven't, ever, laughed my head off and lungs out this much watching such a silly comedy. It's got charm, doesn't run out of steam, doesn't overstay its welcome, and goes in a genuinely surprising direction towards the third act. The most fun I've had watching a movie together with friends in a looong time.
Almost a week later, and I'm still haunted by a Coneheads sex scene set to "Soul to Squeeze" by the Chili Peps. I can still see it when I close my eyes.
I remember reading an interview with Dan Aykroyd where he said he came up with the idea for Coneheads while watching TV one night super high, and all the people's heads looked stretched and pointed like cones. This big screen adaptation locks into the same wack vibe with distressing alien body horror, naked Aykroyd butt, cameos from almost every SNL adjacent comedian who owed a favor, and horny Coneheads mating rituals. Way weirder and more uncomfortable than I expected for a Lorne Michaels production. Dan's a legit nut.
Based on the Saturday Night Live sketches he first created while still a member of the cast, Dan Ackroyd brought Coneheads to the big screen in the second official SNL movie (after Wayne’s World’s huge success the year before), a great vehicle for his very quirky, distinctive voice.
The film gives Ackroyd space to really let his imagination run, getting a lot out of the sheer oddness of his extra-terrestrial characters and all the people they meet—having a lot of fun putting them into suburbia to play off of. He and Jane Curtain 100% commit here, and sell that “fish out of water” angle, all disarmingly matter-of-fact in a way that really suits the quirky material.
