Michael B. Jordan’s Val-Zod Superman Project Hires New Writers

A few months ago it was announced that HBO Max was developing a Superman limited series project with Micheal B. Jordan that will focus on the DC character Val-Zod. We’ve now learned that Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters are set to write the series.

Metayer and Peters recently wrote the screenplay for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Some of the other film and TV projects they’ve worked on include a series titled American Snow, they also worked on a new pilot for a show based on the Carthaginian general Hannibal, which has already been picked up at AppleTV+ with Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. set to direct.

Val-Zod is another Kryptonian with powers who hails from the same doomed planet as Superman. The hero finds refuge on Earth 2. Like the original Man of Steel, he is sheltered on his adopted planet but eventually in the comics is pitted against a brainwashed Superman.

Becoming the last of his House after his parents' execution by Krypton's court, Val quickly made friends with fellow orphan Kara Zor-El. Moments before Krypton's destruction, Val, Kara, Kal-El, and another child managed to escape and survive their planet's destruction thanks to Jor-El and Lara.

Through his trip, Val was educated by his parents' knowledge recorded on his capsule, teaching him that violence was the stupidest way to overcome issues, driving him to become a pacifist man.

Falling on Earth, he was found by Terry Sloan, who offered him asylum to "protect" him from the outside world, becoming a recluse.

As of right now, Jordan is set to only executive produce the project, but there’s a good chance that he actually might star in it as well. This seems like a great project for Jordan, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up taking on the lead role in the film.
