Cave Paintings in Valle Chico

In the Cañón de Agua Caliente canyon, home to huge cacti, there are also petroglyphs and cave paintings dating from 1400 BC. These are evidence of the first civilizations who called Baja California home, and passed by the caves in their search for a place to settle on the peninsula. To get to the paintings, you must take a dirt road offering views of the sea, desert and mountains, with the Sierra de San Felipe range on one side, and that of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir on the other.  
It’s best to seek out a tour guide and a 4X4 if you plan on discovering these areas that are home to local flora and fauna including barrel cacti, ironwood, and Mexican palo verde; as well as foxes, hares and hawks.
