FARMINGTON – They rocked the runway with their creative designs at the second annual Trash Can Couture Fashion Show.

Sparkly lights with good-vibe music played backdrop to the trash bags and recycled newspaper, bubble wrap, duck tape dress designs fashioned and modeled by the scouts, along with a few parents. The event, held Saturday at the University of Maine at Farmington, was sponsored by Kingfield Girl Scout Troop No. 54.

The event is more than just a lot of creative fun because the proceeds from donations at the door will go towards the troop’s service projects.

This year the Scouts decided funds raised by the show will help purchase toiletries for the United Economic Ministries in Salem and are hoping to raise enough money to help purchase supplies for the construction of a handicap ramp for the food pantry.

Troop leader Madison Kangas came up with the idea of the Trash Can Couture Fashion Show and held the first one last year with 28 participants. This year, 40 contestants created outfits and showed them off to an appreciative audience of family and friends.

“It’s something everyone can participate in and be creative with,” Kangas said.

From ages four on up, they walked the runway showing off their designs as the show’s MC Megan Norster told a little bit about each designer. Each participant designs the outfit made from trash bags. Added were duct tape, balloons, newspaper and feathers.

Contestants walked the runway to music and modeled their dresses in front of three judges: Tammy Goldfrank, Longfellow Restaurant; Amy Alexcovich, DMD, Strong Dental Clinic; and Tammie Gould, administrative assistant/manager, United Economic Ministries in Salem. The dresses were judged on creativity and originality.

An after-party with cake and music celebrated the event’s success.
