1 Main Gate (Sanmon)
A ridgepole raising ceremony in 1884 marked its construction, and the gate was rebuilt after the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake. The name on the plaque is Hekiunkan (Hall of Blue Clouds).

2 Three-Storied Pagoda
Dedicated in May 2006, the 22.5-meter pagoda enshrines a relic of the Buddha and statues of Shakyamuni, Kashyapa, Ananda and Maneki-neko (the beckoning cat). An image of the beckoning cat is among the twelve animals of the zodiac carved on the outside.

3 Altar
The altar plaque states “three worlds” meaning past, present and future, and there are corresponding seated statues of Shakyamuni, Amida, and Maitreya, surrounded by other buddhas.

4 Shofukuden (Maneki-neko Hall)
Legend holds that while hunting, the daimyo Ii Naotaka was saved from a lightning bolt when the abbot’s pet cat Tama beckoned him into Gotokuji. This is the origin of the lucky “beckoning cat” or maneki-neko statue, indispensable to millions as a charm for home safety, business success, or fulfillment of prayers. The hall houses a statue of Kannon as a maneki-neko.

5 Ii Family Tombs
The neatly arrayed tombs are for successive Ii family leaders and their wives, including the late-Edo-period statesman Ii Naosuke and the key Gotokuji Temple patron Ii Naotaka. Designated a National Historic Site in 2008.

6 Lecture Hall
The building was relocated in 1967. Inside are statues of Kannon, Manjushri, Samantabhadra and Jizo, as well as a bust of Ii Naosuke (made by Ii Naoyasu) which is a temple treasure.

7 Patriarchs Hall
Dedicated in 1999, with statues of Buddhist patriarchs seated in chairs, including the abbot Sokan who is a founder of this temple, Shudo who  led the temple expansion, Soto Zen sect founders Dogen and Keizan, and Prince Shotoku, as well as memorial tablets for other abbots and patrons of the temple.

8 Red Gate (Akamon)
The Red Gate was donated in 1885 from the Edo mansion of the Ii family and placed where the East Gate now stands, and later moved to the present location.

9 Temple Bell
Cast in 1679 by Fujiwara Seiji (Kamaya Rokuemon), the bell is the oldest property on the temple grounds, and is renowned for its beauty. In 2000, it was designated a Cultural Property of Setagaya.

11 Shugetsuen Garden and Teahouse
Alongside the dry landscape garden is the Munian, the favorite teahouse of Ii Naosuke. (Closed to the public)

●Memorial Steles
In the burial grounds and elsewhere in the temple are many steles memorializing religious and cultural personages.  Engraved on the stone at the right of the Sanmon entrance are the rules for a Zen temple.
