Abstract

A distributed grating comprises a chirped arrangement of grating elements (comprising high-index regions) (210) arranged along a line (optical fibre) (220) characterised in that the arrangement of the elements (210) has a reflection symmetry about a plane (250) perpendicular to the line. Such a grating can provide dynamic dispersion with a reduced detuning as compared with prior art devices.
