Aus den SalzenThe 4-hydroxybutyric acids and their esters of the general formula I, the latter in the presence of small amounts of an acid or base, go over by themselves into their lactones of the general formula II, especially in the dissolved state (cf. also H. Kröper in Houben- Weyl, Methods of Organic Chemistry VI / 2, page 571, Thieme Verlag Stuttgart ßs ^ lf). Conversely, the lactones of the general formula II can very easily be converted into the acids of the general formula I; Equivalent amounts of alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides break down the lactones quickly when heated. The aqueous solution is cooled and acidified with hydrochloric acid; the precipitation is taken up in ether, the ether extract is dried and mixed with a small excess of cyclohexylamine. The resulting salt is filtered off and dried in a desiccator, crystallized from isopropanol Essigester, thus obtaining 3.7 g (58 fo d. Th.) Of the Cyelohexy! Amine salts ^. If one follow 20 sodium hydroxide solution added to to produce a strongly alkaline reaction, heated for 10 minutes in a boiling water bath, diluted with water, cooled, extracted with ether and then discards the ether solution and acidify the aqueous portion with dilute hydrochloric acid. The precipitated crude acid is taken up in ether and freed from the solvent. The residue that remains is dissolved in ethyl acetate and, by adding cyclohexylamine, the cyclohexylamine salt of 4- (2 f -fluoro-4-biphenylyI) -4-hydroxy-butyric acid is precipitated, which, after crystallization from ethyl acetate / methanol, melts at 174-175 ° C .
